Child Visa Subclass 802
Subclass 802 Child Visa eligibility — who can and cannot apply
The Child Visa 802 is a residency visa that allows children to live permanently in Australia with their parents, who are Australian citizens, permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens. The child must be under 18 years old (or under 25 if studying full-time) and financially dependent on their sponsoring parent.
This visa is only available for applicants who are already in Australia and does not apply to:
- Children who are married, engaged or in a de facto relationship
- Applicants who have not had a previous visa application refused or cancelled.
- A child over 18 who is not studying full-time (unless they have a disability that prevents them from working)
Visa processing time — how long does it take?
Can you fast-track an 802 visa application?
Unfortunately, the Australian Department of Home Affairs does not offer an official fast-track option for the Subclass 802 visa. However, submitting a complete and well-documented application can help prevent unnecessary delays and speed up decision-making.
Our immigration experts understand how emotionally challenging and stressful these moments can be, which is why we do everything in our power to ensure your application is processed efficiently with little disruption.
How to prepare a strong 802 visa application — important documents you need
- A completed visa application form
- The child’s birth certificate as proof of relationship
- Proof of the parent’s Australian citizenship, permanent residency or eligible New Zealand status
- Health and character clearance documents
- Parental consent documents (if applicable)
- Proof of financial dependency (if the child is over 18 and studying)
The 802 Child Visa Australia application must be lodged online through the Department of Home Affairs website while the child is physically in Australia. Your application will incur a submission fee, and it’s highly recommended to upload your supporting documents electronically to avoid unnecessary delays.
Travel conditions for the 802 Visa — restrictions and requirements
Travel within the first 5 years
Once granted, the Visa Subclass 802 allows unrestricted travel in and out of Australia for five years from the approval date. This means the child can visit other countries without jeopardising their visa status.
After five years
The child will need a Resident Return Visa (RRV) to travel freely to and from Australia. If they have become an Australian citizen by this time, they will not need a travel visa.
